English (mainly U.S.): transferred use of the surname, originally a local name from Garriston in North Yorkshire or else a patronymic for the son of someone called GARRET (SEE Garret). William Lloyd Garrison (1805–79) was a prominent American anti-slavery campaigner: the given name may originally have been bestowed in honour of him. It is now sometimes given to the sons of fathers who are called GARY (SEE Gary) or GARRY (SEE Garry) (cf. JEFFERSON (SEE Jefferson)).
